Mount Toubkal in Morocco, standing at an elevation of 4,167m, holds the distinction of being the tallest mountain in North Africa. While ascending Mount Toubkal presents a challenge, it demands no prior mountaineering expertise. The breathtaking panoramic view from the summit serves as a gratifying reward for your determined efforts. Embarking on this classic Morocco trek ensures that the journey to the summit is truly worth the endeavor.
Embark on your journey from Marrakech at approximately 9 am. The scenic drive, lasting about 1 hour and 30 minutes, heads south through the picturesque Moulay Brahim Gorges, passing the bustling Asni weekly market every Saturday before reaching Imlil. Nestled at an altitude of 1740m, Imlil serves as a primary trailhead with streams and paths branching out in various directions. Upon arrival, we leave our vehicle to enjoy a refreshing glass of mint tea in the village and meet our local guide before embarking on a 4km excursion. The route takes us south to the Berber village of Aroumd (Aremd) at 1843m, passing through the hamlets of Ait Souka, Targa, and Imoula. The striking landscapes reveal the jagged peaks of the Western High Atlas, including Jbels Aguelzim (3547m), Aksouâl (3847m), and the Adrar Adj (3122m). We stop in Aroumd to explore this unique village perched on a large moraine spur, offering views of ancient irrigated terraced fields. Afterward, we continue for another half an hour to our lunch stop in the village of Ait Souka. Our overnight stay will be at Dar Ouassaggou.
The Morocco trekking adventure commences from the village of Imlil. Progressing along the Mizane Valley, we pass through the village of Aremd and reach the shrine of Sidi Chamarouch. Our route takes us east, crossing flood plains and ascending rocky cliffs. Crossing the river, we arrive at the pastoral shrine of Sidi Chamarouch, a site popular among tourists and pilgrims. The trail continues to climb steadily, leading us to the snowline and the Toukbal Refuge (3206m), where we spend the night. The walking duration is approximately 4 to 5 hours.
An early start marks our ascent of Mt Toubkal (4,167m). From the summit, weather permitting, breathtaking views extend over the Atlas Range and the Sahara Desert. After enjoying the vistas, we descend past the refuge and follow the well-trodden path back to Imlil. This day involves 8-9 hours of trekking, encompassing a 900m ascent and nearly 2,500m descent back to Imlil. Expect to be dropped off in Marrakech around 5:00 pm.
